MidHudson Regional Hospital Now Offering State-of-the-Art 3D Mammography Technology

news item

Strengthening its commitment to providing Hudson Valley patients in the Herb and Sue Ann Redl Center for Cancer Care and the Women's Imaging Center the very best in diagnostic technology, MidHudson Regional Hospital now offers digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography.  3D mammography is a technique in which an x-ray arm images the breast from many different angles, layer by layer. This enables a radiologist to view the breast in significantly greater detail than traditional 2D mammography.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 3D mammography, when used along with standard digital mammograms, increased breast cancer detection rates by more than 40 percent.  Lawrence Koutcher, MD, Medical Director of the Redl Center For Cancer Care, believes the new technology has several benefits for patients.

"In addition to the improved ability to detect breast cancers earlier, 3D mammography is significantly more accurate than older methods of detection," said Dr. Koutcher.  "It also leads to a decrease in call-back rate.  Having this valuable technology on site will only help improve patient outcomes."

Certified by the American College of Radiology and the Mammography Quality Standards Act, the Women's Imaging Center at MidHudson Regional Hospital offers specialized services beyond 3D mammography including high-definition breast ultrasound, dedicated breast MRI, advanced stereotactic breast biopsy, bone density scans, and more.
