Infectious Disease Specialists

The Division of Infectious Diseases provides world-class care for individuals experiencing a broad range of infections. We also provide the best training and mentoring of the next generation of clinicians, educators and researchers in the field of Infectious Diseases with a special focus on tick-borne diseases as part of a two-year fellowship program fully accredited by the ACGME.

What Does an Infectious Disease Provider Do?

An infectious disease specialist is a provider who specializes in treating infections that are caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. These specialists primarily care for inpatients at Westchester Medical Center (WMC) with the goal of managing fevers and infections in order to reduce admission rates and hospital stays.

For patients seeking HIV treatment and prevention in a comprehensive primary care setting, please visit The Ally Care Center.

Inpatient Infectious Disease Care

At WMC, infectious disease specialists work with other doctors and healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat infections that are severe or difficult to treat. They might be consulted if a patient has a fever of unknown origin or if a patient is not responding well to treatment. Our providers are instrumental in preventing the spread of infections within the hospital by advising on infection control measures.

Outpatient Infectious Disease Care

In an outpatient setting, our providers might see patients who have chronic infections, such as HIV or hepatitis C, or who have infections that are difficult to diagnose or treat. They might also see patients who have returned from another country with an unusual infection. Our practice also excels in the treatment of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. (View the ‘Lyme Disease’ tab on this page for more information.)

As full-time faculty at New York Medical College, our physicians offer formal training and mentoring to medical students and residents. The division also leads a fellowship program for advanced medical trainees seeking further expertise in the field of infectious diseases.
