Bloodless Medicine

Bloodless Medicine

Bloodless Medicine Is Better Medicine

Through blood conservation and transfusion alternatives at MidHudson Regional Hospital, we offer a progressive approach to blood management to all patients in our care.

Our use of safe and effective transfusion-free medical and surgical techniques reduces the risks that are associated with blood transfusions.

Our goals are to improve patient outcomes, respect the needs of patients for whom blood transfusion is not an option, and educate other medical professionals in how we can improve medical and surgical outcomes for all patients.

Blood Conservation Program

Blood conservation is the use of scientifically based medical and surgical techniques to minimize or avoid the transfusion of donor blood components.

MidHudson Regional Hospital offers a comprehensive blood conservation program, which provides patients with an alternative to transfusion, and helps to identify and treat anemia before surgery. Through a multidisciplinary approach, physicians and nurses collaborate to support and educate our physicians and community. As a result, the patients surgical and medical experiences and overall health outcomes are enhanced.

Advanced techniques for blood conservation include:

  • Anesthetic techniques: controlled hypotension, regional anesthesia
  • Cell Savers (salvage): with special circuits for Jehovah’s Witnesses
  • Chemical hemostatic agents
  • Surgical hemostatic tools
  • Interventional radiologic techniques
  • Non-blood volume expanders
  • Pulse oximetry to measure oxygen in your blood
  • Synthetic recombinant drug technologies
