The George T. Whalen Family Trauma Center - First and Only ACS Verified Level II Trauma Center in the Mid-Hudson Valley

With over 20 years experience in trauma care, MidHudson Regional Hospital is home to the area’s best Level II Trauma Center, and is the first and only facility in the mid-Hudson Valley to be verified by the American College of Surgeons.  The hospital’s facilities include a heliport and three trauma bays, with full time, board-certified trauma surgeons on staff who are complemented by a talented team of orthopedic and reconstructive/aesthetic surgeons and neurologists. Over 900 trauma victims are cared for annually, making George T. Whalen Family trauma center one of the busiest Level II Trauma Center in New York State.

Our strength in expertly caring for trauma patients lies in our close relationship with the WMCHealth Network of established ACS-verified Level I Adult (Westchester Medical Center) and Pediatric (Maria Fareri Children's Hospital) Trauma Centers with whom we work closely for training, education, protocols and personnel.  At MidHudson Regional Hospital, in your time of dire need, you're being cared for by the best of the best.

When time is of the essence, the largest and most highly-specialized team at MidHudson Regional Hospital is at its best.  The trauma team assembles immediately upon alert, and is ready to meet the demands of our area's most critically injured patients.  With four full-time, board-certified trauma surgeons on staff, we are the Hudson Valley's most experienced trauma team, and the only ACS-verified Level II trauma center in the region.

Our multidisciplinary trauma team is led by a trauma surgeon tasked with orchestrating all facets of patient care, directing everyone from pre-hospital emergency medicine technicians to all hospital-based clinical specialists.  This highly defined process ensures the trauma team is able to expertly implement the integrated care plan for the injured patient, all with the intention of reducing the risk of death and the potential for future disability associated with a traumatic injury.  From the time of patient arrival, through the admissions process, to treatment, discharge, and any outpatient care required, the trauma team is fully responsible for the care of each patient.

On April 14, 2017, MidHudson Regional Hospital passed rigorous peer review scrutiny and became the first and only Level II trauma center in the mid-Hudson Valley to be verified by the American College of Surgeons.  To earn ACS verification, a trauma center must prove its strict adherence to best practice guidelines, demonstrate efficiency of treatment, invest in the continuing education of clinicians and staff, and have an institutional commitment to excellence in trauma care.

A trauma center receiving verification from the ACS is key, as New York State now only utilizes the ACS verification program as its standard to designate trauma centers.  The ACS verification program applies a comprehensive review process that all centers interested in trauma verification must undergo for official status. No other trauma center in the Hudson Valley area has cleared this high bar to receive verified Level II status.

The trauma team at MidHudson Regional Hospital proactively works to prevent trauma via community outreach and education.

Each year area seniors are invited to a complimentary fall prevention workshop featuring  interactive stations focused on learning one’s potential risks for falls, how to optimize personal stability, how to remove hazards in the home, and other vital information.  Additionally, MidHudson Regional Hospital offers Tai Chi classes to help improve balance and reduce the risk of in-home trauma, and regularly offers bicycle helmet fittings for children and teenagers.
